Cohousing meeting and potluck 2012/01/20
recap of meeting and recap of the group, chatting about the slogan and maybe the name for the community
Marion and Janet, freshman year roommates, looking to make this happen, found the property 2.14 acres, bought it as a leap of faith
1. Had an environmental survey
2. geographic/engineering survey (and mapping)
3. on the property, two barns, log cabin, and 1950s house we'd like to move
4. hired architect, Mark Cornett, 3 days of design meetings, played with ideas and drawings
5. came up with a membership structure
6. property is zoned for single family, have to go through the process of rezoning (PUD), 20-24 clustered units, possibly 32 households
1.  meet with city departments, first up is fire
2. 4-6 months for the PUD (Planned Unit Development) approval
3. (Creativity and marketing class project will be us.)
Laughed about our marketing possibilities… IU Alumni magazine?  Maybe… Collins Living Learning Center? Article in Bloom (maybe following an ad in Bloom)
Nancy shows off some postcards of the site plan
Janet shows off the renderings
Nancy talking about the planning commission meeting, showed them the plans, the writeup
Full membership discussion 80/120 for membership, plus 30 a quarter, these costs will rise as the units get built
Bert, about the common house -- when would that be built?  We'd like it at the beginning.
Nancy talking about brainstorming slogan by putting concepts into affinity groups last meeting
Fun/social, safe, green inclusive, intentional,
Nancy: "Where neighbors become friends, and friends become family"
Larry: "Neighbors you can live with"
Jim Roach at planning said "Community by design"  (Larry adds "neighbors by choice" but there was some objection that sounds exclusive)
"Intentional Design"
"Community designed homes"
"A Creative Community"
"Creative", "Supportive"
This group seems to be about "finding what we have in common"
Shared values -- what are our shared values?
"Uncommon community with values in common"
Janet -- something about living creatively but in a scaled down footprint
"A grand design with a small footprint"
Larry: "Big idea, little footprint"
"Blooming Commons"
"Neighborly but not nosy"
"Creatively designed to foster community"
"Designed for natural connections"
"Creative Housing By Design"?
"Creative community by design"
"Creative housing community by design"
"Clustered housing encouraging community"
"Susankan community"  (Kevin's silly suggestion)
Something with "neighbors and friends, friends and neighbors" in it, as maybe a sub-slogan
"Where friends are neighbors and neighbors are friends"
"Friends redesigning community"
"Redesiging community for friendship"
"Uncommon design for the common good"
"Community by design with a neighborly footprint"
"Spontaneous Society"
"Common plot with a common pot"
"Uncommon design that respects the commons"
"Grand Design with a small footprint"
"Big ideas, small footprint"
Marion liked the word "spontaneous", "sociability is spontaneous"
"Creatively enforced planned spontaneity"
Kevin joked: "Where the buildings go up faster than the slogan gets chosen"
We should get some younger peoples' ideas, appeal to a younger crowd

Marketing ideas:  At the contradance community a table or a potluck
A cohousing contradance?
Meeting on the 30th at the MCPL
Possible ways to do meetings:  some at homes, some in public
some with meals, some without
some at restaurants
"Tell me about cohousing" button
Groucho Marx glasses

So far on the meeting days poll. Wednesday meetings look better than others
Gail asks about vetting members, etc…   Marion says a lot of communities are just self-selecting…  but right now we're short and don't have a system for this.
