Website Design - Lessons Learned with Tips & Resources

Details
In this meetup we will discuss tips and resources that we have learned that help us to become better web designers.
Back in 1998 when I developed my first website for a class project, my school gave our class some space on their web server. I designed a beautiful website (for 1998 standards) that had all sort of cool graphics, information, and even learned how to link all of the pages together. I learned web design by looking at the source code of other websites and using their code to repurpose as my own. At that time, I didn't realize that I needed to save images on my server instead of linking to them on the internet. Unfortunately, now the website is no longer available. One of many lessons learned over time... If I only knew then what I know now...
At this meetup I'd like to discuss tips and resources that we have learned over time that have helped us become better web designer. I will share optimization techniques and resources that I have learned which will speed up how fast your website loads and techniques for ranking well in the search engines.
I'd like to go through the process of setting up a simple website, talk about domain registration, how to point your website to a hosting account, and how to setup a good email workflow. I'll go through the various settings that I like to use when setting up email accounts using Gmail and touch on the "inbox zero" philosophy for staying productive.
