Stories Of An Ex-Party Girl: Chapter 3: Mirror, Mirror

Online event

I was probably the least likely girl to end up addicted to any kind of drug. I didn't fit the stereotypical image of a "party girl"...experimenting and messing up over five years of my life. - Excerpt from Dani La Barrie’s Stories of an Ex-Party Girl

TIME COMMITMENT:
- 1 hour every Sunday (see schedule below) 6 pm - 7:00 pm EST to attend the group meeting. During this time, we will read the chapter together. After reading the chapter together, there will be a discussion.

You will need:
- Stories of an Ex-Party Girl book
- A notebook, pen/pencil or highlighter
- A candle or incense of your liking
- Your favorite essential oil

CHAPTER THREE, 09/26/2021 Mirror, Mirror

We will begin every group meet with a brief guided meditation. Come prepared with a candle or incense lit in your room/space and your favorite essential oil(s) nearby.

Highlights from Chapter Three:

- I allowed the feelings of a lost little girl to show up and take control of my adult life
- I was blind to my own beauty because I was so caught up in comparing myself to everyone else. Over time, not only did I tell myself lies, but I believed the lies I internalized.
- Feeling that you belong is important in seeing value in life and in coping with intensely painful emotions. We have an inherent desire for a sense of belonging.
- Honesty is the only way that you are going to make the change. Change will come when there has been an acknowledgement of certain actions and behavior patterns in your life.
- Your shadow means acknowledging the actions and characteristics that are not so pleasant to embrace, acknowledge, or own responsibility.
- Self-reflection will bring you out. I did not want to be remembered as the woman who had so much potential but could not control her urges, thoughts, or her vices.

CHAPTER FOUR, 10/03/2021 The Empty Me

We will begin every group meet with a brief guided meditation. Come prepared with a candle or incense lit in your room/space and your favorite essential oil(s) nearby.

Highlights from Chapter Four:

- Start understanding and exploring your thoughts and triggers, and how they translate into your actions
- My acting out was outward proof that there was an inner problem
- A trigger sets you off in feeling an unpleasant emotion and drives you to do something (act out) to feel better. Triggers can set you off to drink...or use drugs...or have sex...or eat...or party.
- Self-awareness is the beginning step on the journey to having a deep, connected relationship with ourselves
- Self-awareness helps us to understand why we do the things we do and gives us the space to look at what is working, what is not working, and shift ourselves accordingly.
- In order to understand your triggers, you must pay attention when your mood changes or your energy shifts.
- There is more than a 50% chance that if you are trying to kick a habit and you find yourself in a place where others are participating in that thing, you will find yourself doing it again.
- Our environment can be a trigger, so as you make a decision to become a better you, it will be vital that you separate yourself from the people and activities that are not in alignment of your ultimate goals
- What are the things that set you off? Is it people? Is it situations?
- Many times if we are not aware of the triggers or the drivers, we remain in certain cycles.
- Sometimes there is no way to avoid a trigger. It's more about learning how to be in it and how to manage it, because sometimes there is no way of fully avoiding it.

CHAPTER FIVE, 10/10/2021 I was an Abuser

We will begin every group meet with a brief guided meditation. Come prepared with a candle or incense lit in your room/space and your favorite essential oil(s) nearby.

Highlights from Chapter Five:

- I was a people-pleaser, always wanting everyone and everything to be okay. I kept a lot of things in my head and to myself so no one would have to know or bear my burden
- I became addicted to using drugs because it changed my "filter" and gave me what felt like invincible confidence and energy
- It was getting harder for me to cover up my lifestyle. I could not keep hiding and pretending everything was fine with me.
- When I finally quit, there was a huge void.
- Forgive yourself and free yourself of how you feel others will react towards you when you decide to take charge of your life
