Next month, we have a talk on cool new things you can do with web fonts by Chris Lilley!

Sure, everyone uses WebFonts now. But are you using the full capabilities of modern OpenType fonts, with your CSS? Did you know how to get tabular or lining numerals, how to avoid fake smallcaps? Are you up to speed on chromatic fonts? What about controlling font loading through a JavaScript API, to optimize performance on desktop and mobile? And what is coming in the future? Did you hear about the new variable fonts extension to OpenType announced three weeks ago? Are you ready to level up on webfonts?

A bit about our presenter:

Chris Lilley (@svgeesus (https://twitter.com/svgeesus)) is a Technical Director at the World Wide Web Consortium (https://www.w3.org/) (W3C). Considered “the father of SVG”, he also co-authored PNG, was co-editor of CSS2, chaired the group that developed @font-face, and co-developed WOFF. Ex Technical Architecture Group. Chris is still trying to get Color Management on the Web, sigh. Currently working on CSS levels 3/4/5 (no, really), Web Audio, and WOFF2.

General details:

Doors open at 6:30pm for food and drinks, which will be provided by Vermonster (http://www.vermonster.com/). The talk will start at 7pm.

Unfortunately, while Vermonster’s old brick building has a lot of charm, it also has a lot of stairs, and does not have an elevator. We wish that wasn’t the case.

We will be live streaming the event and afterwards it will be posted to our Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB-Q0Af4p8A23QTnUxg-fgg). Please check this page for the link on the date of the event.
