Boston useR virtual TidyTuesday Meetup
(open to everyone - regardless of location. we also welcome all newcomers, enthusiasts, and experts to participate)

Virtual useR Meetup organized by:

  • Asmae Toumi (happy birthday!)
  • Kevin Kent
  • Rachael Dempsey

#TidyTuesday is a weekly data project aimed at the R ecosystem (see info below). An emphasis is placed on understanding how to summarize and arrange data to make meaningful charts with ggplot2, tidyr, dplyr, and other tools in the tidyverse ecosystem.

This meetup will be hands-on: after a brief introduction of #TidyTuesday and the weekly dataset and two short lightning presentations, everyone will have a chance to explore the data in small groups (via breakout rooms on Zoom) and then share their work with their group. Whether you want to practice exploratory visualization, apply a new analytical technique, try out a new plot theme or just learn tidyverse things from others, #TidyTuesday is for you.

Agenda:

  • 5:30: Introductions to useR Meetup & TidyTuesday (Rachael Dempsey & Tom Mock)
  • 5:35: Presentation #1 - Meghan Hall: "Good to Great: Making Custom Themes in ggplot2"
  • 5:50: Presentation #2 - Kevin Kent: "The science of (data science) teaching and learning"
  • 6:00: Introduction to R for Data Science Slack Channel - Jon Harmon
  • 6:05: Breakout into groups to work on TidyTuesday dataset - groups will be open for two-hours but you can come and go as you want!

A few additional volunteers will join to jump in and out of groups and help with questions as they arise.

Thank you to:

  • Carl Howe
  • Jon Harmon
  • Josiah Parry
  • Meghan Hall
  • Priyanka Gagneja
  • Tom Mock
