Travel to the Dominican Republic with the nonprofit organization Cambiando Vidas to build a house for an impoverished family who lives in the community of Las Charcas de Garabito!

I wanted to invite you to join the volunteering trip from May 24 – 31st, 2010 to build a home of Juan, Maria, and four of their children from Las Charcas. The team is coming together nicely with a contingent from Vancouver and others from the East Coast. We are very excited to embark upon this endeavor together. If you are at all interested in joining us, please let me know as soon as possible because there are only a few spots left. I’ve included our tentative itinerary below!

Here is the very TENTATIVE plan for the trip. Things may change depending on how the build advances...

Juan is a farmer for his living.
We will send photos prior to the build.

MONDAY - May 24:
--All team members meet in Santo Domingo Airport by 2pm.
--Once team is gathered, team will go on private bus with Jose Abreu to San Juan de la Maguana (approximately 3 - 3 1/2 hours)
--There will be a brief orientation during the bus ride.
--Team checks into hotel LIBANO in San Juan... free time until dinner.
--Team will meet to go to dinner at El Espia Restaurant & meet family

TUESDAY - May 25
-- Breakfast at the top of the LIBANO Hotel
-- Team travels together to the Community of Las Charcas in private truck or van (approximately 20 minutes away)
-- Team works with community on house (moving block, laying block, mixing cement)
-- Lunch with the family and local volunteers in the community
-- Team continues work on home.
-- Team returns to the hotel approximately 4-4:30, rest until dinner
-- Dinner at El Espia approximately 7:30
-- Enjoy evening at Tupinamba / Dancing

--Breakfast at hotel
--8am travel to the community of Las Charcas
--Team will work to help put the forms on the top of the walls and to prepare, mix and carry cement.
--Lunch will be in the community
--Work continues after lunch
--Late afternoon return to Hotel Libano in San Juan.
--Rest until dinner- approximately 7:30pm
--Pizza at hotel
--Relax, play games, learn to dance in upstairs area of the hotel

-Breakfast at hotel
-8am travel to the community of Las Charcas
-Help to build roof. Back fill in all floors of the house with dirt.
-Lunch in Community
-Late afternoon return to Hotel Libano
-Rest until dinner - approx 7:30
-Dinner at Restaurant
-Relax/Visit sites in San Juan

-Breakfast at hotel
-8am travel to community
-Pour concrete floor, plaster front of house
-Lunch in Community
-Continue working in afternoon
-Return to Hotel
-Rest until dinner - approx 7:30 or 8:00
-Dinner at Restaurant

-Breakfast at hotel
-8:30 travel to community
-Paint front of house
-Pour front walkway
-Help with Electricity and plumbing
-Lunch in Community
-Finishing touches on house
-Return to Hotel
-Return to community 6:00 to celebrate completion of home and share dinner with family and community

-Breakfast at hotel
-Pack up and take bus to beach
-Enjoy lunch at beach
-Arrive Santo Domingo Mid-afternoon, Check into Hotel Mercure in the Zona Colonial
-Free time to see sites
-7:30 meet for farewell dinner with the team

MONDAY May 31st
-Return home

*R&R during the week.... days that permit there may be time in afternoon be available for playing ball in the community with local children, visiting the preschool that recently opened, trip to the river, seeing local ball game, dancing, and playing games on top of the hotel in San Juan.

***** Please note that this is a tentative itinerary. Depending on how far the team gets every day will depend on the evening activities. The team will have a great opportunity to be immersed in the culture and community of the locals during the day.
