Let's Talk About Housing Options and Divorce
What happens to the marital home and who moves out is often the most disruptive piece of the divorce puzzle. Not only does it have a significant impact on everyone's daily life, the marital home is often the single, largest financial asset and as such it drives much of the settlement discussions. In this meetup we'll be discussing: - the factors that go into deciding what happens to the marital home; - temporary living options including nesting and living separately under the same roof; - factors in choosing a new home - dealing with the emotions; - challenges in refinancing/qualifying for a mortgage And if we have time, we'll also cover adapting to living solo. The session style is informal and interactive so bring your questions. PRIVACY: If you'd like to join us but don't wish to sign up publicly, please RSVP to me directly.

What we're about

***If you are concerned about your privacy and would like to attend these sessions without signing up on Meetup, I understand. Please contact me to make other arrangements.***

This group is for anyone interested in learning about the divorce process. The focus is very much on the logistics with tons of practical information and additional resources. We meet weekly covering a different topic each week on a four week rotation. Each topic will be a standalone so you can join at any time.

Planned topics will likely include exploring your legal options – what’s the difference between traditional, collaborative, mediation and doing it yourself (“pro se”); mediation - what it is and is not, how it applies to divorce and does it work?; financial preparations – what you’ll need to know for the legal process and how to go about gathering the information; housing options – is staying in the marital home smart and what are the alternatives; parenting plans – what these are, why you need one and how to create your own.

Who should join

- Anyone considering divorce who’s looking to learn more information

- Anyone in the early stages of getting divorce

It could be you’re considering divorce and trying to weigh your options. It could be your spouse has just surprised you with divorce papers and you’re in a panic, overwhelmed by what to do next.

The group is open to men and women and couples provided partners are able to be respectful and civil to one another.

Why join

- Learn how the divorce process works

- Learn the vocabulary of divorce

These meetings are not legal advice and are not a substitute for working with an attorney. By attending these meetups you will be more informed about the divorce process and that will help you work more effectively with your attorney, other professional advisers and hopefully, your spouse.

Note: This group is not a recovery group. We likely will touch on emotional issues - it's impossible not to - but we will not be specifically covering these areas.
