Our history

The Box Hill Art Group Inc. was established in 1952 and since then it has nurtured many thousands of budding artists, as well as stretching the skills of experienced and exhibiting artists.

Moreover, we cater for water colours, oils, acrylics, pastels, drawing, life drawings and mixed media.

We also offer our member's access to lessons, paint outs, art demonstrations, competitions, exhibitions and arts awards.

The Box Hill Art Group will open up a whole new colourful world for you to enjoy.

Our membership

Membership is open to anyone between 16 and 116 years of age. Whether you are just starting out in painting or drawing or have been doing it for years you will love being a part of this group, meeting with like minded people to express yourself visually. Sunday Sketch Together Morning - Alexandra Gardens, Kew

Alexandra Gardens

Join us for sketching outdoors on a Sunday morning. We will meet at the Alexandra Gardens in Cotham Road, Kew.

What's happening: We will meet up and sketch for around 2 hours and then re-convene to share our sketches and have a picnic lunch.

What do I bring: Bring along your own sketching materials, stool, hat and picnic lunch
It is highly recommended that you are fully vaccinated.

What is there to sketch:
Interesting plants, large trees, rotunda, Old Kew Post Office, lake and fountain, each other and nature

Cost: $2 payable on the day

Who's coming: Everyone is welcome to attend. Bring your family and friends or come along on your own. Around 7 more people than those that RSVP here will be in attendance

All Media - Monday mornings with Tessa Joy

Box Hill Community Art Centre

Monday classes are open to beginner artists looking to learn, and experienced artists seeking to improve their skills in any media or style. Whether you are a new artist starting your first work, or an accomplished artist seeking further improvement, this class will really help you develop in a supportive environment.

At this class you can learn at your own pace in the medium and style of your choice. You will be encouraged and coached to develop the artistic and technical skills you need to get maximum satisfaction from your art.

What do I bring? Bring along your own paints/pastels/pencils, brushes and paper/canvas (new or unfinished project) – whatever materials you have.

Term bookings $200 for 10 weeks

If you are confirmed with the Covid-19 virus or waiting on the results of a test, please stay at home and do not attend your class or the centre.

A course for new and experienced drawers

Lines, tones and colours cannot speak but they potentially have a lot to say. Let Kevin Boyd show you how to make them talk, to make them shout and even to make them sing.

CREATIVE DRAWING - Taking Inspiration from the Natural World with Kevin Boyd

With images and references from nature we will explore ways to draw that best expresses the essence of the chosen subjects along with creative and personal interpretations.

Wet and dry mediums will be used including graphite and coloured pencils, coloured markers, inks and water colour on hot-press watercolour paper. A cartridge sketch book may be used to trial ideas and techniques.

Kevin is a passionate teacher of Art with considerable experience across a range of forums including TAFE, Schools, Community Groups and Online.

With a strong desire to instill confidence in his students to learn from experience, Kevin promotes a learning environment of balancing demonstration and instruction with the nurturing of personal development. Individual expression is always his main objective.

Material list:

Quink Ink and any coloured ink.
Dip pen and/or Fountain pens
A3 Watercolour pad – 185 GSM minimum weight.
Watercolour Pencils - Derwent Inktense, or other brands.
Watercolour paints – colours and quality of your choosing.
Small to medium brushes.
General sketch pad.
Drawing pencils of choice.

Acrylics with Susan O'Brien

Box Hill Community Art Centre

Susan O’Brien teaches our acrylic class. The class is suitable for all genres from realism to abstract and suits all experience levels. There is scope for painting both from life as well as from photos and sketches. Susan is well known for her acrylics and she has won many awards.
