Details

Welcome to the virtual Brighton Data Forum! We are a meet-up bringing together Brighton-based people and organisations doing great work with data.

From students to thought leaders, we have a range of amazing local talent and organisations doing exciting projects with data. Our goal is to foster a community around all of this activity and encourage productive conversation within it.

The forum covers all data-related topics, including: analytics, data science, governance, warehousing, privacy & ethics, management, integration, visualisation, etc. We offer a blend of semi-formal presentations as well as informal chats and networking opportunities. Now and for the foreseeable future, this meeting has moved online and will be conducted remotely via zoom.

In this meeting's program, we offer two valuable presentations:

  • "A perspective into AI", Tiffany Seeley, Software Developer at University of Sussex SPRU DARE and Python Instructor for Code First Girls
  • "Tips and Tricks with Jupyter Notebooks", Sian Thompson, Data Engineer and Analyst
  • Open discussions, all

First up is Tiffany Seeley, a software developer and python instructor. Tiffany has been working with the University of Sussex Science Policy and Research Unit (SPRU) on the Diversity Approach to Research Evaluation (DARE) initiative, which is a grant-funded research project from the Medical Research Council. She is also an activist for women in technology and teaches women programming skills with the non-profit organisation Code First Girls. Tiffany's talk will dive into some AI techniques that are shaping how we apply for jobs and how some AI techniques could make us question ethical boundaries of progressive AI technology.

Next, Sian Thompson's talk entails a quick intro to Jupyter Notebooks, configuring virtual environments, package management and publishing your own notebooks as static html reports via Github. There will also be a demo to show using IPyWidgets as part of interactive dashboards. Sian is a Data and Analytics professional with 4 years commercial experience. Sian has been programming with Python since 2018.

We will close the meeting with open discussions from the membership.

Please ensure you have zoom installed and running on your computer or device in advance. Then at the time, make yourself comfortable, optionally with a drink and a snack at hand, and click the link coordinates.
