What we're about

The Brighton Explorers Club is a volunteer-run, multi-activity outdoors club based in Brighton, established in 1967. We do a wide variety of activities including rock climbing, road cycling, mountain biking, walking, caving, kayaking, windsurfing, badminton, tennis, coasteering, surfing – and more!

Many of our activities are based in Brighton and the surrounding areas. From late spring to early autumn we do watersports on Brighton seafront. We run weekly road cycles through the summer months. Mountain biking runs throughout the year around the South Downs, as do our weekly walks and hikes. We climb indoors throughout the year and, when the weather is good, we climb outdoors locally. In the autumn, winter and spring we paddle down local rivers by kayak and stand up paddleboard.

We also run trips throughout the year, both in the UK and abroad. Some of our most popular trips include: white water kayaking on the Usk, Dart and Tryweryn rivers in the UK and rivers in the French Alps; surfing trips to Devon, Wales, Portugal and Morocco; hiking and mountaineering in Wales and Scotland; caving in Yorkshire; cycling in Wales and France. Cost of trips is kept low by using our own equipment, staying in hostels, bunkhouses or camping, car sharing etc.

You can see all our scheduled activities, trips and events on the calendar at http://www.brightonexplorers.org

BEC is all about encouraging its members to get out into the great outdoors. We welcome people of all levels of ability including beginners, but generally we don’t offer instruction. However, we do offer introductory sessions into many of the activities we offer and our more experienced members are on hand to give new members tips and advice.

In order to take part in any of our activities (EXCEPT New Members Nights and any events advertised as being open to non-members) you must be a member and must sign up to all activities by logging in to the website and registering your attendance.

Membership is £51.50 for the year. Membership allows you to take part in our activities, trips and events.

Please note that some activities require proof of previous experience or enrolment on an introductory session with us. We offer introductory sessions for kayaking and SUP at a cost of £10. Please contact activity leaders via http://www.brightonexplorers.org if you have any questions.

We are an over 18’s only club, so unfortunately can’t accept minors on any of our activities or events. BEC is keen to encourage and support all members and especially younger members (18-30) to get into the outdoors.

Regular Thursday MTB Ride

Brighton

We do cross country Mountain Biking all year round with three organised rides per week, catering for a range of fitness and ability levels. The riding is a good mixture of cross-country downland trails and singletrack and our rides can range from an easy going 2 hour ride to an all day epic. Our Thursday night rides are a more moderate pace, covering fewer miles and with more stops. In the summer we run an additional easier ride on Thursday nights. To get the most out of riding with BEC, you will ideally have some off road experience and a good level of fitness. Members will require their own mountain bike. To take part in BEC activities you must be a member. Find out more about how to become a member (and have access to all our trips and other activities) at www.brightonexplorers.org. Or come along to one of our New Members Nights or contact our email the new members secretary, to find out more: [masked].

Indoor Climbing - Brighton

Needs a location

We alternate between various indoor climbing venues in Brighton every Monday, meeting at around 7-7:30pm. Our climbing group also organises outdoor climbing locally, elsewhere in the UK and abroad (such as our upcoming bouldering trip to Fontainebleau, France). To take part in BEC activities you must be a member. Find out more about how to become a member (and have access to all our trips and other activities) at www.brightonexplorers.org.
