Mac DeMarco - Totally Sold Out

A little story. December 2012 a small group of people (including me) headed to the Green Door Store to see someone we had never heard of and not even really listened to. A Canadian bloke called Mac DeMarco. The promoter, Joe had been telling us how good this guy's music was and how good his live shows were (though he could be a bit eccentric at times). Anyway we turned up, were surprised to see the place was packed, stood near the back and loved it. It immediately became two people's gig of the year, I headed off to the stall to buy the album. We were blown away by the show. The songs were great, country tinged (just a little bit) melodic very catchy indie clearly from across the pond.  Also his performance was great, he was funny, a bit bonkers at times, ridiculously hyper, got the crowd hooked from the start. Occasionally he rabbited on about something you couldn't make head nor tale of but then he went straight into great song after great song.

He's also playing at maybe the nicest venue in town. Great sound, perfect size, nice separate proper bar, clean toilets etc.

Anyway here's some songs

Next song is a ode to his favourite brand of cigarettes

last song of his last album, as you can see from the video he's not your average singer/songwriter as in he's funny a bit bonkers and doesn't take himself too seriously, which makes a nice change

Finally the first track released from his upcoming album

Yeah, hmmm very weird one this. As a gig musically I didn't enjoy it as I couldn't get into Mac's music that I like but then I've never been to a gig before where I have just watched with amazement where someone I thought was an obscure Canadian country tinged purveyor of melodic indie-pop turns into a teen sensation to the utter surprise of me, my friends, Joe the promoter and I think even Mac. Good to see that not everyone under the age of 21 takes any notice of the boring Brit bands forced on them by the NME etc

just had the run down on this gig from my daughter who declared it the best fun ever. Sounds like security had their hands full! Apparently the speaker jumper was in their group , and her friend managed to thank Mac DeMarco afterwards outside for playing her favourite Neil Young song (as in say thank you, don't let your minds wander further...)
