If you love to read and want to expand your repertoire of novels as well as socialise in a friendly setting and have a good old chat about the book (and then life in general), this is the book club for you. The idea of the group is to be sociable and make new friends but having a mutual point of discussion to break the ice and break down those initial nerves at meeting new people. It also gives us all a good excuse to get engrossed in a book! A key focus on wine themed meet ups (okay, maybe that is just for my benefit!) making new friends and using the book chat as a ice breaker to create a new sociable circles. LGBTQ friendly - single, couples - anyone straight/gay/bi or otherwise - everyone is welcome and the group will be very inclusive - new members please bear this in mind to be respectful of others in the group.
Meeting in a sociable setting at Al Campo, Brighton - monthly on a Friday evening (generally last Friday of the month - may vary slightly so check future event dates). I also spend time arranging events, meals and even the odd author to join us as well as starting now to arrange some events mid month which don’t require a book read but just socialising!
We are a friendly group, and book discussions serve as an ice breaker and common ground rather than the pure focus of the evening. There is no “circle time” or any analytical questions - Its very informal. The whole evening focus is to meet new people, socialise and have fun making friend - it just so happens we have all read the same book the previous month!
If you are looking for an outlet to have deep literary discussion or debate about Shakespearian themes - this probably isn't he meet-up for you but there are more focused groups on meetup that will be.
If you want to chat about a book, sample the local wine and then share funny holiday/worst date/"embarrassing time you fell over in front of your boss on that xmas do" anecdotes - then this definitely the meet-up for you! As of January 2018, due to the rising costs of meetup and the already £500+ expenses I have paid to keep the group running, I am charging a £2 for each official monthly meet up fee - this is only payable for the main meetup each month and not for extra ones which are arranged. Please make payment via PayPal on the event page you are attending - or you can pay cash on the night into the pot.
Look forward to meeting everyone soon.
UPDATE: The group has been running now for 2 years, and we have a selection of regular members as well as those who dip in and out. We vary in age as a group from 20s to 60s and all of our regulars are always very welcoming to the newbies. Attendance is usually between 10 and 20 of us. Although its a book club, don't be afraid to come if you haven't read the book; perhaps you started it and it wasn't for you - or perhaps, like me, you didn't start it because you didn't like the look of the front cover! ;-)
