Details

A whole year of BrisJS goodness is nearing completion! Be proud of yourself for being such a great supporter of our JS community and come round off the year with some more great talks. (PS: YOW conf is on at the same time, so go for the immersion level experience and come visit BrisJS right after the first day! ;-) )

Join us and partake in pizza and drinks from our sponsors while networking with your peers.

⏱ Schedule:
6:15 PM - Arrive & mingle - wait at Gallery Level elevators for security to let you up (same level as the train station)
6:30 PM - Welcome & introductions by Kevin Vanderbeken
6:45 PM - Talks begin…

💫Syntropy Studio: A creative coding environment - Matt Way (@_MattWay) - 20min
Matt has kindly offered to introduce us to his new concept he's been using to support his AI research. He's calling it a CCE (creative coding environment). It has some similarities to an IDE, a data science notebook, and reactive programming software like lighttable. The applications of it could help out JS developers from many areas such as generative art, data science, algorithm design, visualisation, component experimentation, etc.

Pizza thanks to PCCW Global and Alcorn group! Drinks thanks to Just Digital People :-)

🖖Ram-da Functional into your JavaScript - Luke Warren (@LukejkWarren) - 20min
When he's not talking up a JS or Ruby storm in Johannesburg, South Africa... he's presenting to us on the core fundamentals of functional programming within JS - thanks to the venerable library called Ramda! It's there to help us on our way when this FP journey seems strange or difficult, and Luke will show us why!

🔬Backtesting trading strategies with JavaScript - Ashley Davis (@ashleydavis75) - 20-30min
In this talk we get an insight on how Ashley approaches backtesting stock trading strategies in JavaScript. Systematic trading often starts by scanning the entire stock market for companies that are considered to be worthy of buying. When you consider that there are 2500 companies on the Australian Stock Exchange and that each has many years of financial data to consider you can start to appreciate that we are dealing with a lot of data here. And how do we determine the criteria that we are searching for? Backtesting is the answer, that's the simulation of trading strategies on historical data to see how they would have performed. Ash will give you a taste for how he does backtesting in JavaScript and we'll work through a simple example.
