AI PAPER READING GROUP || January Edition || Recommender System
The Precinct, Level 1, 2, and 3, 315 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, AUAI Paper Reading Club - Monthly Meetup
Join us for our monthly AI Paper Reading Club, a relaxed and welcoming space for anyone curious about the cutting edge of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Whether you're here for deep dives into the math behind the models or prefer to focus on the practical impact of applied research, this event has something for you.
Each session features a volunteer presenter who picks a recent or classic paper to unpack, ranging from rigorous theoretical work to industry-shaping applications.
Bring your questions, your insights, or just your curiosity. There’s no pressure to present, and all backgrounds are welcome.
We believe in learning together, at our own pace, no gatekeeping, no ego, just AI enthusiasts helping each other grow.
Paper: Recommendation from a Reward-Optimizing Perspective
Join us for a fast, self-contained overview of the machine learning foundations behind large-scale recommender systems, drawing on real-world experience from a well-known company in online advertising. We will cover the key building blocks of modern recommendation, including collaborative filtering, click models, off-policy evaluation, and fast maximum inner product search.
The session will emphasize counterfactual learning and the challenges of optimizing recommendations when feedback is collected under biased policies. We will connect these ideas to two influential works:
- Counterfactual Risk Minimization (Swaminathan & Joachims, 2015) https://arxiv.org/abs/1502.02362
- Lessons from the Netflix Prize (Koren, Bell & Volinsky, 2009)
https://www.kdd.org/exploration_files/6-Netflix-1.pdf
Expect a practical, intuitive tour of the algorithms that power today’s large-scale recommendation engines.
!!! Please RSVP to our Humanitix link to confirm your attendance.
We thank The Precinct for generously sponsoring the venue for this event. The company support makes it possible for us to bring the AI community together, share knowledge, and grow as a collective.52 attendees
