The Brisbane Data Science Meetup is hosting a Hackathon with Data For Democracy (information below). The event aims to enable people to work together on positive social impact projects and provide an opportunity for those who wish to have a hands on go at some Data Science projects to do so.

Feel free to come with a team and a project idea ready or we will help those who are looking for a team to work with find one on the first day.

Goal For The Hackathon:

There are two main goals for this hackathon:

• Pitch ideas and work on projects that will be of positive social impact. This can be anything from cleaning and merging useful datasets and making the algorithm and data available via github, to putting together a prototype project. If you are after inspiration, have a look at the Data for Democracy website (http://datafordemocracy.org/)and Github account (https://github.com/Data4Democracy).

• Learn about the process and techniques of working with data and working in Data Science if you would like some exposure to the field.

Data For Democracy (D4D):
Data For Democracy is a grassroots, volunteer organization seeking to leverage data skills for social impact.
D4D works with the following goals in mind:

• To produce objective, rigorous data analysis that keeps people informed and engaged, and supports them in forming their independent opinions.

• To connect with communities and partners that contribute to positive social change, and help equip them with the tools and technology to support the work they are already doing.

• To make data science transparent and accessible to a wider audience, and create opportunities for passionate and socially conscious people to get involved with using data to serve the public good.
