What we're about
Upcoming events (4+)
We meet in the Cross Hands pub in Fishponds on Thursday evenings. You'll find us around the front tables in the pub, always to the left as you come in but also often to the right as well.
Our group ranges from those who have not really played any board games at all, to those who own hundreds of them! We play a wide variety of modern board games, but someone will always lead each table and explain the rules to anyone who doesn't know the game that they are playing.
If you are planning on joining us for gaming then you MUST RSVP to this event. Please do not turn up unannounced, or if you are on the waiting list. If your plans change then please amend your RSVP to free the space up for others. Thanks for your cooperation with all of this.
If you won't be able to join us close to 18:30 then please post an estimated ETA so that we can plan gaming accordingly.
There is no requirement to stay as late as 23:00, but if you are planning to leave before 21:30 then please mention this on the night to help with gaming plans.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
Join us as we gather to play board games and card games at the Geek Retreat, by the Hippodrome in Bristol, UK.
We organise a number of games for each event with a variety of styles (Euro, 4X, cards, Social deduction, heavy, light etc). Each gaming table will have someone hosting who knows the rules and is ready to teach all the players. If you want to run one of your own games you can sign up and be added to the schedule on the night.
We begin to gather and chat from 7pm and plan to get the games started between 7:30-7:45pm. You are welcome to arrive at any time before this and hang out in the cafe. We don't reserve player spaces so arrive on time if you have a specific game you want to be involved in. The games should wrap by about 10:30pm as we need to be out by 11pm.
The event is completely free but we encourage you to partake of the wonderful food and drinks available to support the venue. The cafe has a range of hot and cold drinks.

Welcome to Wednesday Boardgaming at The Drawbridge.
We're finally back, starting Wed 28th July for In Real Life meetups. It's been a long time coming.
SIGN-UP REQUIRED (see bottom)
Whether you're new to board gaming, wanting to expand your hobby and meet other gamers, or a veteran and looking forward to regular game nights again - we welcome all people of all experiences. If there are specific games you want to play and you have a selection to bring along, that's definitely encouraged, but there's no requirement to as the regulars will usually bring a selection.
We start around 6pm, usually with some lighter games then from 7pm onwards we usually start a few longer ones. Finish is usually 10:30-11pm when the pub closes.
There is no charge for the games nights.
The Drawbridge Pub has been our home for many years. Although they have a function room upstairs that we have been hoping to use, currently there is an issue with the lighting meaning it is not suitable. They hope to have this fixed later in the year, but it is unfortunately an expensive job. They are planning a refurbishment at the same time.
So, for now we are downstairs in the main pub towards the back at the reserved tables.
They also have an app now that can be used for ordering food and drink to the table. Download the Greene King app (the pubs chain) on App / Play Store.
Paid Parking is available in the streets behind the Drawbridge and there is an NCP car park on Nelson Street. Be aware if you haven't driven in central Bristol for 18 months there have been LOTS of changes and Baldwin Street especially is now buses only. There are plenty of bicycle racks nearby and many public transport routes to the centre. We regret that no private helipad is available.
THE PANDEMIC (unfortunately the real life one, not the board game):
Whilst officially all restrictions have now been listed, realistically we are a way still from being back to normal.
Social distancing is not an easy thing to do with board games due their very nature, so some groups of people may wish to stick with the same group throughout the entire evening.
We strongly encourage people to do lateral flow tests before they visit. Remember they are freely available from the government website and many workplaces.
And, of course, if are eligible to get vaccinated, make sure you do at the earliest opportunity. This isn't something we would actively look at checking, but it's just sensible advice.
WE WILL BE LIMITING CAPACITY for a number of weeks or months until we see how the UK situation develops as well as make sure The Drawbridge can accommodate us
Because of this SIGN-UP IS REQUIRED.
(Week 2 onwards - now raised to 24)
