What we're about

This is a group for anyone who is learning Mandarin Chinese or who is a native speaker. Meetups are usually every couple of weeks, alternating a Chinese meal with a social. The socials will mostly be Mandarin only for the first hour to help us get some good practice in! All abilities are welcome.

FAQs:

Q: How good does my Chinese need to be for the Mandarin only sessions?

A: You need to be able to have a conversation in Chinese. It doesn't matter if you aren't very fluent - if you are happy to mostly listen and contribute where you can, that's fine. We do not speak any English unless very necessary!

Q: Can I still turn up even if I don't RSVP?

A: Please RSVP to events as I always book tables. However, there is more flexibility at the social events so we would still like to see you if you can make it last minute! I always have my phone with me with the meetup app on it, so if you can let me know, please do.

Q: I don't speak Mandarin, can I come along and learn?

A: Strictly, not really. This group is a social group and we do not 'teach' anyone. If you are studying independently and are a beginner, please do come along and see what you can learn from being in a Mandarin speaking environment, but do not expect anyone to be able to give you a lesson!

Q: I haven't been to a meetup before, what should I expect?

A: Our Mandarin meetups are very relaxed and informal. There are always new people who might be a bit nervous too, so don't worry! Come along and try it out, and meet some new friends.

Q: I can't make it in time for the meal, can I join later?

A: It depends on where we go, but we usually stay in the restaurant all evening. Sometimes it will be ok to join for a drink afterwards, but it depends on the restaurant, so please ask me if you want to join a bit late.

Q: How do I find you at the bar/restaurant?

A: There will always be a meetup sign on the table. Take a look at the organiser's picture so you can recognise me!
