Let's explore the sadly neglected world of 60's era Groove Jazz (AKA Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, etc)
. Much of this music was based on blues forms, as well as modal jazz and even some standards. Playing these tunes will help us grow as improvisers: we will search for ways to sound fresh over relatively "static" forms, and work on deepening our rhythmic feel. Let's look at the music of Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, Grant Green, Jimmie Smith, Lonnie Smith, Big John Patton, and others!
This Jam is for intermediate level players of all instruments (more advanced players welcome, but...be kind!) We will meet at a studio in Brookly (TBA), likely on Saturday afternoons at 3 (this is flexible according to people's schedules).
Reading music is not necessary but could be helpful; we will try to emphasize learning tunes by ear as much as possible.
