Today the average consumer can already afford a drone. But how does it work? Can you fly anywhere? Do you need a drone pilot license? What happens if an inexperienced pilot or a bird destroys your drone?
Nobody has all the answers yet but experts and policy makers are busy looking for them. Will they make the rules clear and accessible for the consumers?
The European Aviation Safety Agency is in favour of strengthening the upcoming new regulation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with a regulation proposing measures to mitigate the risks of those systems. One of their suggestions is to require some categories of drones to be sold with an awareness leaflet. The leaflet is directed to the consumers and should contain all the information required to use the drone in accordance with the applicable regulations on aviation safety, security, privacy and data protection, liability and insurance.
This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about drones and to contribute to the existing framework. How? By designing our own leaflet. Not in legalese, but in terms that anyone could understand.
A legal design jam is a collaborative creative session where complex legal information is broken down into a meaningful and easy to understand format. Ivo Emanuilov (https://ivoatlaw.com) is a researcher at KU Leuven focusing on public and private air law, intelligent transport systems, legal aspects of unmanned aircraft systems, autonomous socio-technical systems and adaptive software in aviation. Ivo is a keen supporter of legal design as a tool bridging the gap between the law and regular citizens. He will guide us through the process of 'translating' the legalese of drone regulations into comprehensible and accessible rules.

Who can contribute? Anyone curious or knowledgeable about drones, anyone with design/communication skills, legal skills or with a few colour markers at home.

Good news! You can also join the first part of the session remotely.
