It's a Wonderful Life is an Christmas fantasy/comedy/drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Henry Travers. The movie is based on the short story "The Greatest Gift", which Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939 and published privately in 1945.
The following simple synopsis is from Cineplex.com: An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed.
The movie was nominated for five competitive Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, but only won a Technical Achievement Award "for the development of a new method of simulating falling snow on motion picture sets". This picture won a Best Director Golden Globe award for Frank Capra. The American Film Institute has the movie ranked #11 on their 1998 list of the top American films of all time. On the updated 2007 list the movie was ranked #20.
