Tutor a Refugee Child

WHO ARE THESE CHILDREN?
They are mainly refugee children from Myanmar, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and local stateless children and denied local schooling.. These children hence receive very minimal education from the community centers that are barely surviving and are constantly faced with struggles of financial difficulty and resources.

OBJECTIVES
This is a weekly public programme that gathers like-minded individuals from near and far to contribute to this concerned community. It is a non-committal voluntary programme, to put it simply - "Giving as much as you can, when you can and however you can';. Ultimately, we would like to achieve:

1.Exposure – Enable the children to expose to different people, culture and sharing/exchanging of knowledge.

2.Language – To improve command of English on conversational level. This is to prepare their future resettlement in other countries.

3. Self-Identity – A platform for them to gain self-recognition. Their presences need to be seen and voices have to be heard.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW & POSSIIBLY DO :

(1) Children’s age – Children’s age in each centre ranged differently; generally from age 3 – 16.

(2) Language – Children speak their mother tongues i.e. Chin’s, Syrian Somalis, Arabic and others. However, some speak decent or good English, whereas some speak very little. English standard could vary even when two kids are as of the same age.

(3) Settings – Children are grouped according to age i.e. 3-5, 7-9, 10-13, 14-16. Volunteers are supposed to select the age group that they are comfortable to deal with. Some centers have classrooms, some are in an open-space setting. i.e. Imbi is held in an open space setting.

(4) Who are the volunteers? And are you the one? Volunteers are from all walks of life - with different diversity and background. Fundamentally, the volunteers must be willing to share knowledge, time and learn. Prior teaching experience is not necessary, you can learn to teach here.

(5) Topics of Interest – English, Maths, Science, General Knowledge and Stories. Strictly no preaching of Religion.

(6) What can you bring? – Nothing. But if you would like to, these would be great and would definitely bring more fun to the class! (1) Writing materials i.e. writing paper, pencils, pens, markers, colour pencils (2) Healthy snacks (3) Demo materials/props i.e. vegetables and fruits (if that’s what you’re
teaching), iPad
