The group's purpose is to introduce catamaran sailing (think of a rectangular trampoline between 2 canoes) to anyone who might be interested. We sail off the beach at Evangola State Park (off Rout 5 in Brant). Typical sails can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour & a half. Depending on the wind speed, 2 to 4 people can be on the boat. Life jackets will be provided. You'll sit close to the water and top speeds can reach 8-9 knots.
You can expect to learn how to maneuver a sail boat, & adjust the sails. You'll need to bring water shoes/ sneakers as you'll need to get on/off the boat while it's in the water a few yards off shore. If you like being on the water & don't mind getting wet while sailing, you'll enjoy this activity.
With experience, you'll learn to "trap out" by standing on one of the hulls as it rides off the water, while "harnessed" to the mast, in order to keep the boat stable-that's when it gets really fun. Sailing usually occurs on weekends (starting at 11 am) or during the week in the afternoons if I can get out of work & there's enough wind.
If the wind dies down there's room to launch kayaks or any non motorized watercraft. My sailing club rents one end of the beach so there's plenty of room to sit, relax & work on your tan when not on the boat. The park also has plenty of room to run, bike & has a frisbee golf course.
