We created the Women in Software Engineering (WiSE) Speaker Series to highlight the accomplishments of successful women engineers, and to connect women aspiring to be software engineers to mentors and peers.

The WiSE series is produced by Codesmith in an effort to improve the diversity gap in tech by collaborating with leading tech companies through mentorship and scholarship opportunities for women pursuing a software engineering education at Codesmith.

Every month, we will bring the best speakers and mentors to an interested audience on topics ranging from career advice for women in tech to the latest JavaScript and web technologies. Following presentations and Q&A, we will provide a space to chat and network over refreshments.

For this month's meetup, we're excited to welcome Elaina Polson and Emily Maskin.

Emily Maskin is a self-taught software developer with a focus on the front end. She leads the web team at Simple Contacts, a fast-growing telemedicine startup that lets you renew your contact lens prescription in 5 minutes via an at-home eye test. Previous companies include Quartet Health, Keep.com, Sailthru, and Code & Theory.

In her talk, Emily will share the story of her transition from journalism into engineering and the evolution of her subsequent tech career.

Elaina is a full-stack software engineer at VTS. She briefly worked in politics and digital marketing before finding a passion for programming. She lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and enjoys traveling, yoga, and taking care of other people's dogs.

In her talk, "Leveraging Elasticsearch and Fuzzy Matching to Dedupe Data: A Lesson in Iterative Development," Elaina will be discussing how an exploration into catching and removing duplicated data in our system led to an unexpected but valuable lesson of importance on iterative development.
