Burning House Zendo is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist community in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. We actively encourage those contemplating meditation, Buddhism or Zen practice to come join us. The Zendo reserves Wednesday night service for newcomer introduction and instruction. Wednesday night service consists of introductions/basic instruction for newcomers followed by chanting the heart sutra, two sitting periods with walking meditation between, then another chant and prostrations (optional). The length of the sitting period is determined by however long everyone present is comfortable sitting.
Please make sure to check meetup or our website burninghousezendo.org before your commute. We are a lay community of professionals and sometimes announce cancellations the day before or day of if no one is able to come lead the service.
We began meeting together for Zen practice in the early 1990s. We met for several years in a member’s home and in various churches in the area, and began renting our own space in the summer of 2001. We left there in 2009, and have now moved into our second independent home.
Please note, we have a basic plan on MeetUp which limits us to 50 members. We routinely remove members who have not visited our page within the last few months to allow new members to join.
Sunday Morning service consists of a formal morning service chanting from sutra book (can be sent and put on screen) and two 30 minute sitting periods with 5 minute kinhin between. The chanting service portion may be skipped based on who's attending.
