Jason Ward spent 10 years working at CERN as a particle physicist, before disappearing into the world of hedge fund quantitative finance for another decade. He reappeared as Principal Data Scientist at the global digital agency Valtech, contributing to delivering business transformation with data in projects spanning both the public and private sectors.
In the talk he will reflect on various learnings from working with data in particle physics, quant finance and as a data scientist in a consultancy role – suitable for both data scientists and business people, as well as looking forward a little to the future. He will muse on themes such as the scientific method in business, user need, streaming data, microchip development for ML, and measurement uncertainty.

Matthew Eric Bassett is a mathematician, two-time startup founder, and former "data science for the film industry" guy. His talk will focus on the challenges of doing even the most basic analytics in commercial real estate/private equity, and how Proda is tackling them by automating the process of data cleaning, and in the process creating efficiencies in one of the most opaque of financial assets.
