What we're about

This group is for non-native English speakers on a professional track who want to increase their confidence and competence with English and, consequently, be more productive at work and find greater satisfaction in all communication moments. We also want to have fun and support each other in the challenge of living and working far from one's native culture!

Starting in Spring 2015, we will meet one or two times per month, initially. Gatherings will begin with a networking warm up activity. The organizer will introduce a business communication skill focusing on topics such as presenting information clearly and concisely, vocabulary building, functioning at meetings and making small talk, among many other topics.

Many of the activities will be drawn from material that the Organizer has developed teaching at companies for the past 20 years.

Communicating in English for Business: Idioms and Stylistic Expressions

Beaverton Round Executive Suites

Welcome to our March 2019 meeting of the Business English for Portland-area Professionals Meetup - for non-native English-speaking professionals (only) ! First time attendees are always welcome. The February meeting was great, focusing on producing the sound and rhythm of American English. We hope to double the attendance this time. Living and working in a second or third language and another culture is a challenging, but also a stimulating and deeply rewarding experience. The purpose of our gatherings is to help participants use English more effectively in workplace settings and improve their English communication skills for the world at-large - and to have some fun! This gathering will include: • Icebreaker and introduction of David Kertzner, the Meetup Organizer • Business Communication Skill: Using Business Idioms and Stylistic Expressions in English. In small talk and in meeting situations, people use idiomatic language and speak stylistically all the time. How comfortable are you listening for such expressions and distinguishing the tone or style of what is being said? This activity will help you become more aware of expressions people use in business situations and offer strategies for managing such language as a listener and a speaker. • Small group practice • Vocabulary Jeopardy Game (time and interest permitting)- A fast-moving game to review vocabulary you may hear on a daily basis. The activities David Kertzner presents will be based on 25 years of experience training employees at all levels at companies around the world - including companies and professional employees based in Seattle and Portland metro areas. Light refreshments provided. We look forward to seeing you there! David Kertzner Managing Director ProActive English [masked] www.proactive-english.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/dkertzner/
