Our Next Meetup: "50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology"
Monday, July 26, 2010 10:04 PM
Greetings fellow science and philosophy enthusiasts!
This is just a reminder that our discussion on "50 Great Myths of popular psychology" will take place on Thursday, August 26th, 7pm at the Centre for Inquiry Ontario (216 Beverley Street). If you were planning on obtaining a copy from the Toronto Public Library, you may want to look elsewhere: there is a backlog of holds on this title (43 as of this message) and only 13 non-reference copies in circulation, so unless you happen to be in the top ten on the hold list, or you don't mind spending some time reading the sole copy at the Toronto Reference Library, it would be advisable to seek an alternative beyond the TPL.
In case you are undecided on whether to take part in the discussion or not, here is a categorical list of the myths that are busted: myths on Brain and Perception, Development and Aging, Memory, Intelligence and Learning, Consciousness, Emotion and Motivation, Interpersonal Behaviour, Personality, Mental Illness, Psychology and the Law, and Psychological Treatment. Each chapter ends with a list of related fictions that are commonplace which are compared to the facts that contradict them (eg. eating lots of turkey makes you tired, but in fact eating lots of anything achieves this effect).
We hope to see you at the discussion!
