Abstract: A talk about how the growth of unstructured data has made it impossible for organizations to understand their data and because of this can’t leverage all available resources (flash, spinning, cloud, whatever’s next) to make sure it’s stored in the most optimal location. We’ll walk you through the technologies that customers are using to try and solve this problem today.
Bio: Marc Olin is the Chief Architect and Co-founder of Atavium, an early-stage Intelligent Data Management company based in Minnesota. Before Atavium, Marc the lead architecture for management software for Dell Storage in charge of design of APIs, UIs, and integrations. Marc was part of the founding engineering team at Compellent Technologies (acquired by Dell).

Biography: Greg Schulz is Founder and Sr. Advisory Analyst of independent IT research, consulting Analyst firm Server StorageIO. Greg has worked as the customer in various IT organizations in different roles. He has been a vendor, as well as analyst, blogger, consultant and author of several books including on the Intel Recommended Reading List for developers. Mr Schulz is also author of the new book “Software-Defined Data Infrastructure Essentials” (CRC Press). Greg brings a diverse background and hands on perspective of having been customer, vendor, analyst across applications, servers, storage, network, cloud, virtual, hardware and software. Biography: Chip Elmblad is an Enterprise Architect in the CTO Office of INFINIDAT. He has a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Azusa Pacific University in California and 20 years of IT experience in support of enterprise-class compute and storage solutions.
Chip joined INFINIDAT in 2016 after serving as Manager of the Storage Solutions Engineering team for IBM FlashSystem products. Previously he was the founder of Subtwo, Inc. an IT professional services company focusing on design and deployment of enterprise compute and storage systems. At INFINIDAT he has authored sales enablement collateral, including solution briefs, technical blogs, product presentations, and serves as the Healthcare segment leader.

12:15 –1:15 “Infrastructure as Code in the Azure Cloud” - Tim Plas - Principal Consultant, Virteva
Abstract: “Infrastructure as Code” (IaC) allows us to software-define the elements within virtual data centers, using a “DevOps” approach, where we can build and manage ENTIRE systems, in much the same way we build and manage software. This session discusses the key concepts behind IaC, and shows how it can be used in the Azure public cloud, for reasons like efficiency, repeatability, version control, rollback capability, and auditability / traceability.
Biography: Tim Plas, Principal Consultant, Virteva. Tim provides consulting in the areas of enterprise architecture, cloud computing and engineering, operational-DBA services (esp. HA/DR), server migrations, server virtualization, and storage. His experience over the past 25+ years has been primarily with server / data-center infrastructure, including being CTO / co-founder of a successful hosting company.

Abstract: In this talk, we will describe how Oracle is using Terraform and other devops tools to design, install, configure, and modify Oracle systems both in the cloud and on premise. Oracle’s IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS clouds and co-engineered systems provide unprecedented performance, scale, and availability while leveraging open source devops tools to simplify administration and management.
Biography: Matthew O’Keefe, Ph.D. is a Vice President and Corporate Technologist in the Cloud Business Group at Oracle, specializing in helping customers leverage the Oracle cloud to build out agile, next-generation enterprise IT that supports game-changing cloud applications. Prior to Oracle he co-founded and sold two storage startups, and was a tenured professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching computer engineering and doing research and development in application development and devops.

Abstract: New computing paradigms are the perfect problem / opportunity pairing for any office holiday party or datacenter. Software Defined Storage (SDS) presents its own problems and opportunities, particularly when paired with traditional technologies such as network file protocols and desktop support. This talk covers efforts (past and present) to implement good ol' SMB on top of a shiny new SDS File System, while Microsoft is concurrently busy building an SDS architecture on top of good ol' SMB...which is really where the world is right now. Time to order hors d'oeuvres for the datacenter.
Biography: Chris Hertel is the Director of SMB Development at Weka.IO. He is also a long-haul member of the Samba Team, founder of the jCIFS project, author of "Implementing CIFS: The Common Internet File System", and lead author of Microsoft's official SMB1/CIFS protocol specifications. He has been working on Windows Interoperability since 1989 or maybe earlier...who can remember? Chris is a weekend warrior with a bicycle, and also a member of the Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI) Advisory Board at the University of Minnesota's College of Continuing Education.

Dave has enjoyed 20 years in the high tech community, building teams, leading people and solving problems. He's been a roll up the sleeves tech, an IT consultant, and an entrepreneur CTO creating services and software around the VMware movement.
Dave has served previously as a technical leader at EMC & most recently executive at Code42. He is a big believer that technology can improve the human condition, if and when we eliminate the complexity that most computer systems create.
