Being nice doesn't make you inclusive by default - Larene Le Gassick
Details
Hi Everybody,
Unfortunately even the best laid plans can go awry and our original speaker for tonight, Trish Khoo, has fallen ill and is not able to present tonight.
Despite this hiccup the event will be proceeding with an alternate speaker. In Trish's place we will have Larene Le Gassick speaking on "Being nice doesn't make you inclusive by default - the current state of web accessibility".
Please see below for a full description of the new talk topic for this evening.
If this changes your plans to attend please update the meetup page for the sake of our catering requirements.
We will be looking to invite Trish back to present on "The Most Important Leadership Skill" at a future date.
Regards,
-Chris

Talk description
There seems to be a bit of a misconception that the responsibility of accessibility falls on the shoulders of the front-end engineer or UX designer. In reality, true accessibility, and inclusivity, goes much deeper than text size and colour contrast.
In this talk, I'm going to show you how accessibility helps you print money. Nope, we're not going to launch a new cryptocurrency, but you are leaving money on the table by locking potential customers out of your product.
I am going to talk numbers - how measurable and tangible returns can be made from an investment in accessibility and inclusion. Plus how to think about accessibility at every layer of your stack and how to build it into your workplace culture.
Research has shown that 98% of the top million global websites fail automated accessibility tests, and that 40% of websites are completely inaccessible to the blind. Larene will be delivering a Brisbane CTO School special edition of her well-receieved 2019 talks (YOW!, NDC, Testing Days Australia) on web accessibility - including how to start building accessibility into your products and processes!
