Professor Stephen Hawking has declared that philosophy is dead, arguing that scientists rather than philosophers "have become bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge". Is this a fair stance? Science is certainly enjoying a golden period of discovery, and interest in scientific enquiry is high, even amongst lay people. Philosophy, in contrast, is commonly seen as dull and fusty. Has philosophy had its day? In today's world, does science inevitably teach us more? What can we learn from philosophy that science struggles with? Will there ever be a renaissance of the glory days of philosophical enquiry?
