CURTAIN CALL: GETTING TO KNOW THE BARD OF AVON

Seven meetings beginning on October 8, 7:00 p.m., running through April; exact dates after October TBD. Meetings will be held in members' homes, with the first meeting in the facilitator's home. All performances (except one, as explained below) are on DVD and available at the public library.

Participants will be responsible for watching the video before the discussion session, except that participants are also expected to attend a performance of the MRU/Theatre Calgary performance of Romeo and Juliet from now until August. Details:

The host for each session will lead the discussion. Members might decide that they want to view a film together rather than meeting for discussion only; the host is welcome to do this. Discussion topics might include: using verse, language and character, soliloquies; irony and ambiguity; exploring character; and so on.

Session 2: Histories: Henry V (1989), directed by Kenneth Branagh (November)

Session 3: Tragedies: Othello (1995), directed by Oliver Parker (December)

Session 4: Tragedies: Macbeth (1971) directed by Roman Polanski(January)

Session 5: Tragedies: Hamlet (1996), directed by Kenneth Branagh

Session 6: Comedies: The Merchant of Venice (2004), directed by Michael Radford (March)

Session 7: Comedies: The Taming of the Shrew (1967), directed by Franco Zeffirelli (April)
