Abbot Hut is located on the continental divided 2925 meters up on Abbot Pass between Banff and Yoho National Parks. The stone hut was built in 1922 and serves as a base for mountaineering attempts on Mt Victoria and Lefroy. For this trip we will be catching the 10:30am bus from Yoho to Lake Oesa the trail ends and we will for the most part be scrambling steep scree. Route finding skills will be used to climb our way up to Abbot Pass. There is a risk of rock and snowfall, so proper knowledge and use of ice axe, crampons, and helmet are mandatory. Please contact me if you are unsure this trip is right for you or if you have questions about gear and clothing.

Hut information: http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/facility/abbot.html

We will be leaving Calgary at 6:00 am so please be gassed up, feed and ready to leave.

It is your responsibility to make sure you have acquired all necessary equipment, clothing, and food for this trip. All outdoor activities involve a certain degree of risk, so it is up to you to be prepared, self-reliant, responsible, cautious, and aware of surrounding hazards. As well, mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for unforeseen changes. For safety reasons, if you show up for this event unprepared or with inappropriate clothing and or gear you will not be permitted to continue on the trip.

If renting gear please make sure it works and you have all parts.

It is my intent to empower members to take responsibility and gain backcountry experience and knowledge. This event should be viewed as a learning experience as well as a fun filled trip.

  • To be on this trip you will need to obtain a reservation for the Abbot and the Lake O’Hara bus. A National Park wilderness pass and a vehicle park pass will be also be required.
  • Reservations can be made by calling the Alpine Club of Canada at 1 (403)[masked]. A membership will be required. Wilderness and bus pass can be obtained at the same time. Book your reservation under your own name as there is not a group name. Book the 8:30am bus.
  • If you do not show me your valid hut reservation and wilderness pass at the parking lot before we leave Calgary you will be removed from the trip and left in the parking lot. You will be required to have your hut reservation and wilderness pass on you the duration of the trip.
  • Trip members will be responsible for setting up their own car-pooling prior to the trip start date.
  • We will be stopping in Banff for hot springs and dinner after the trip. If you are not interested in participating, please make arrangements to car-pool with others not attending prior to the event start date.

MANDATORY PRE-TRIP MEETING: August 14, 2013

Egor (and anyone else who's interested) the butcher with all naturally raised meats is Second To None Meats - http://www.secondtononemeats.com/.

Safeway also just started stocking naturally raised steaks - just look for the Open Nature brand or a Spring Creek Farm sticker.

    Happy carnivoring!

Hi Egor, I should have room in my car. Give me a private Email with your address and phone #. I'm taking Carol and I will see if Clifton wants a ride.

    Hi All,

It looks like most of us will be leaving Saturday morning. The Hostel is full, overflow camping is not permitting tents, and I was told it is unlikely we will get a campsite at Kicking Horse in Yoho. So, we will be meeting at the parking lot prior to the trip. Please make sure you have your reservation for both bus and hut on you. If your are interested in hot springs please be prepared.

Soooo, anyone up for carpooling beautifully early on Saturday? I can be in either Inglewood or Bowness on Saturday morning - whichever is easier. Darcy? Meghan? Anyone?

    August 19, 2013

  • Carol

Will, did you end up making the group booking at Lake Louise hostel? Just wondering if I need to organise a carpool Friday or Saturday. On that note, anyone up for carpooling?

    August 19, 2013

    • Katalin

Carol, Will should be sending out an email shortly but as Meghan said above, the hostel was fully booked. I am thinking of camping in the Overflow ground for Lake Louise CG Friday night - just need to sort it out with the peeps in my carpool. I think Darcy still has room in his car so you may want to reach out to him to see when he wants to go (Friday night camping at Overflow vs. Sat very early morning).

      August 19, 2013

    • Katalin

As it turns out, overflow camping not allowed due to bear activity. Looks like we are stuck with Saturday early morning start.

Nicole has dropped out of the trip, so everyone will be responsible for their own meals. I suggest bring food that requires boiling water.

    August 18, 2013

  • Meghan

Does anyone want to carpool with me, or has room for me in their vehicle so I'm not driving out by my lonesome? : )

    August 18, 2013

    • Katalin

Yes Meghan. Me and Will carpool with you. I will send you a text.

Here is the information from the Abbot hut meeting.

    Must have:
    1. Helmet.
    2. First Aid kit.
    3. Backpacking boots.
    4. Gaiters.
    5. Reservation for the bus and hut (on you at all times).
    6. Gloves are optional (scrambling).

We will be meeting at the Lake O’Hara parking lot 45 minutes before the bus leaves. If you are late they will give your bus reservation away and you will not be able to participate in the trip. If you miss the bus, you are out of luck. Please be packed and ready to go.

The ACC hut supplies all cooking items, sleeping pads, and heat. A sleeping bag is required.

You will need 2 lunches, 1 breakfast, 1 dinner (some people will be sharing).

The Hostel in Lake Louise is full for the weekend.

For those interested, we can goto the hot springs and then dinner after the trip. Will need bathing suit, towel, and change of cloths.

If you have any question please contact me at [masked]

Natasha dropped out as well, and Clifton purchased her reservation. If you can get a reservation for the hut and the 8:30am bus there are spots for two more members on the trip.

For those on the attending list who have not made their reservation it is unlikely you will be able to make the trip. The next bus leaves at 10:30am two hours after we would have left for the hut.
