Abbot Hut is located on the continental divided 2925 meters up on Abbot Pass between Banff and Yoho National Parks. The stone hut was built in 1922 and serves as a base for mountaineering attempts on Mt Victoria and Lefroy. For this trip we will be catching the 10:30am bus from Yoho to Lake Oesa the trail ends and we will for the most part be scrambling steep scree. Route finding skills will be used to climb our way up to Abbot Pass. There is a risk of rock and snowfall, so proper knowledge and use of ice axe, crampons, and helmet are mandatory. Please contact me if you are unsure this trip is right for you or if you have questions about gear and clothing.
Hut information: http://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca/facility/abbot.html
We will be leaving Calgary at 6:00 am so please be gassed up, feed and ready to leave.
It is your responsibility to make sure you have acquired all necessary equipment, clothing, and food for this trip. All outdoor activities involve a certain degree of risk, so it is up to you to be prepared, self-reliant, responsible, cautious, and aware of surrounding hazards. As well, mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for unforeseen changes. For safety reasons, if you show up for this event unprepared or with inappropriate clothing and or gear you will not be permitted to continue on the trip.
If renting gear please make sure it works and you have all parts.
It is my intent to empower members to take responsibility and gain backcountry experience and knowledge. This event should be viewed as a learning experience as well as a fun filled trip.
To be on this trip you will need to obtain a reservation for the Abbot and the Lake O’Hara bus. A National Park wilderness pass and a vehicle park pass will be also be required. Reservations can be made by calling the Alpine Club of Canada at 1 (403) 678-3200. A membership will be required. Wilderness and bus pass can be obtained at the same time. Book your reservation under your own name as there is not a group name. Book the 8:30am bus. If you do not show me your valid hut reservation and wilderness pass at the parking lot before we leave Calgary you will be removed from the trip and left in the parking lot. You will be required to have your hut reservation and wilderness pass on you the duration of the trip. Trip members will be responsible for setting up their own car-pooling prior to the trip start date. We will be stopping in Banff for hot springs and dinner after the trip. If you are not interested in participating, please make arrangements to car-pool with others not attending prior to the event start date.
