D3: Elk Lakes Hiking Weekend

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE TRIP DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING UP!
•CORA Organizers no longer accept cash at the trailhead! In order to join this event you need to be a CORA 2014 member; alternatively, you can pay $5 and join as a non-member. Payments are done online (the blue link on the left. Type the amount of payment in the box. Smart phones don't have this application, so you need to do this on a PC/Mac).
• This will be an Easy - Moderate hiking trip into the Alpine Club of Canada's Elk Lakes Cabin.
•Day 1: Parking Lot to Elk Lakes Cabin (9.0 Km)
•Day 2: Optional Day Hike to Petain Waterfall (5km round trip), Hang out around the lake.
•Day 3: Elk Lakes Cabin to Parking Lot (9.0 Km)
To be on this trip you need to obtain a reservation for the Elk Lake ACC hut.

Reservations can be made by calling Alpine Club of Canada at 1-403-678-3200. It is recommended that you make your reservation ASAP, as space is limited.

If you do not have your own ACC membership, the organizer can book for you under the CORA group membership, pending that you pre-pay for the reservation and that there is still availability. Please note that any fees paid to the organizer will be NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE.
Where: Kananaskis/Elk Lakes Provincial Park
Max: 12 people
Distance: Minimum 18 km (roundtrip)
Elevation Gain: 200 m (Calgary tower is 191m)
Hiking Time: 3 hours (only an estimate).
Difficulty: Moderate
Skill level: A decent level of fitness is required to do this outing. Our pace is moderate to fast, so ensure that you are confident in your abilities to keep up with the group.
PLEASE NOTE: It is your responsibility to make sure that you have acquired all of the necessary equipment, clothing and food for this trip. All outdoor activities involve a certain degree of risk, so it is up to you to be prepared, resilient, self-reliant, responsible, cautious and aware of surrounding hazards. As well, mountain weather can be unpredicatable, so be prepared for unforeseen changes. For safety reasons, if you show up for this event unprepared or with inappropriate clothing and/or gear you may not be permitted to continue on the trip.

Driving/Carpooling: The trip starts at the trailhead, but as a convenience to the members, we will carpool in the designated city location
Please reimburse some gas $$ to your drivers.
Mandatory Gear: Backpack (40+ litres with chest and waist straps), light sleeping bag, waterproof hiking boots, trekking poles, waterproof shell layers, 2 changes of clothes, food and snacks, 2 litres of water, headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, first aid kit (minimum blister and wound care kits).
Optional Gear: Hat, small daypack (20L or less) for day trips, bathing suit, camera, map and compass, GPS, bug spray, fire starter, bear spray, bear bells, drysacks, board games, deck of cards, camping pillow, ear plugs (cannot gaurantee there won't be snoring).
•Do not wear the following: Jeans, casual shoes (including sneakers/trainers, work boots), cotton layers, small running packs. These are not appropriate footwear for hiking in the mountains. If you happen to wear jeans and non-hiking footwear, you'll be sent to home in shame :)
Cancellation policy: 24 hours prior to the trip. Keep in mind that this is not a dating service; you are either committed or not. Depending on your attitude, Friday late night cancellations may result in having a "no show" -- unless you have a viable excuse.
During the trip, you are expected to follow the trip organizer(s) and stick with the group. However, CORA trip organizer(s) are NOT certified mountain guides, but only experienced hikers volunteering and sharing their knowledge. As such, you are responsible for your own safety and equipment.
There will be a MANDATORY pre-trip meeting on June 19, 2014.

At this pre-trip meeting all required permits and/or reservations need to be presented to the trip organizer, or you risk being removed from the trip.

You must attend the meeting in order to participate in the trip if I have not hiked with you previously.
