Photo Critique 2018
• What we'll do photo critique You know sometimes a photo that you have taken just doesn't look like what you imagined when you depressed the shutter. It happens to everyone. We all want to take good, hopefully great shots but sometimes our camera fails to capture what we thought that we saw. The resulting photo is lacking somehow. Perhaps the composition is off, or the colours not as vibrant as you remembered. You may want the shot to work but may not know what is needed to make it work. This is where Photo Critique comes in. How does it work? Members post a photograph and describe what they had hoped to achieve when they took the shot. Other members look at the photo, read the description and then comment on what could have been done differently or what they would do in post processing to achieve a better result. Ignore Calendar settings--this will stay open all year • What to bring A desire to help others and a willingness to offer advice in a friendly way. Comments should be made in a non confrontational way. We can all learn and learning is always better in a environment conducive to learning. Be nice! Also--and this is very important take others thoughts and comments in a positive way. At the end of the day It is your photo and you will see things differently. You can learn from others perspectives however. • Important to know If in doubt about what is posted in comments ask the photographer to clarify--start a discussion and then hopefully others will join in.

What we're about

This group is for passionate photographers from amateurs to semi-pros who want to learn from each other, and pursue the art of photography within an active and creative community.

Some of us have spent a lifetime honing our skills. Some have found our creative spark ignited in the last year. Wherever you are on the spectrum there is only one pre-requisite to joining us - Passion!

At P4P, we teach each other how to see, how to tell a story with a single image, how to find beauty in the mundane, how to tap into the creative source that transforms a "picture" into art.

We are constantly looking for new ways to challenge ourselves and each other. One week it might be an excursion into a dark zone near Calgary to shoot the Milky Way. Another week, we might attend a sporting event to develop our skills with live action. We also have weekly assignments and monthly contests to encourage members to get out on their own to explore a specific theme.

Have an idea for a meetup? Let us know!

As of the fall of 2016, we have added two new features:

1) The juried monthly contest: Members post photos consistent with the chosen theme, and a jury of three P4P members chooses the top photograph, and awards the prize to the winner. The jury includes the winner from the past month, and two volunteers from the organizing committee.

2) The monthly critique and peer-review: We all have those photos that almost work -- and we're not sure why they fall short. With this meetup, we tap into the wealth of knowledge of P4P members to get feedback and new ideas.

Membership fees of $20 per year are coming, to cover the various costs associated with maintaining the group. An example of these costs are the 6 monthly dues paid to Meet-up to belong to their organization. Details will be posted here by the end of November, 2016.

Additional fees are sometimes charged for special meetups such as in-studio workshops or excursions with a professonal photographer. These fees go directly to the studio or photographer.
