Global Day of Coderetreat

Details

Have you ever wanted to try something, but didn’t have the time to experiment with your daily development grind? Do you want to learn about industry best practices like TDD and pair programming? Do you want to hone your skills and learn to develop faster, better and with fewer bugs?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then the Global day of Coderetreat is for you!

OK… so what is it?

Code retreat is a day long, intensive practice event, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressure of "getting things done", the code retreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement. Practicing the principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time. Furthermore, it's a good way for developers to share experience and awesome dev tricks with each other through pairing.

What exactly would I be doing?

The Day of Coderetreat consists 4 practise sessions along with a breakfast, and a lunch. Each session builds upon the learnings from the previous session. Here's an example outline for a coderetreat:

https://www.coderetreat.org/pages/facilitating/structure-of-a-coderetreat/

Breakfast starts at 8:30, but we won’t be starting the actual sessions until 9am.

We have several katas that we can choose to learn from, or you can bring your own suggestions.

How should I prepare?

If you have a favourite language, and you’d prefer to use an IDE to write the kata in that language, please come to the event with an environment set up in the IDE ready for you to write unit tests.

If you can't set one up, don't worry! You can also use the cyber-dojo to write code and run tests in any language you choose! Check it out here: https://www.cyber-dojo.org/

Breakfast and lunch will be provided, so please contact the organizers if you have any dietary restrictions.

Free parking near the venue can be found on 12th street SW between 13 ave SW and 15 ave SW, or on 11 ave SW and 12 ave SW one block west of 14 street SW.
