Photographing Courtright Reservoir
What we'll do: Meet at Shaver Lake Liquor 41387 Hwy 168, Shaver Lake, CA 93664 at 10 AM. From there, we will travel up Hwy 168, turning right onto Dinkey Creek Road. Near the end of Dinkey Creek Road, we will turn right on McKinley Grove Road and continue ~5.7 miles, stopping first at the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias. There are restrooms here and it would be a good place for any late comers to catch up. The trees here are unbelievably giant so shooting them is best achieved with wide angle lenses! Next, we will continue up McKinley Grove Road, turning left at the Courtright Reservoir turnoff. From there we will continue on up to the Le Conte Divide Scenic Overlook. After that, we will continue towards Courtright Reservoir, stopping along the way to photograph meadows, and wildflowers. We will then arrive at Courtright, where we will continue photographing from various spots around the lake. At this point, those that do not plan to stay for sunset or stay the night, may begin their journey home. For those that choose to stay, we will locate our campsites, grab a bite to eat, and start setting up for sunset! True sunset is at 8:19pm so it'll be good to be settled and start shooting at the very least 30 minutes before that. WHAT TO BRING: This will depend on whether or not you choose to stay for the evening or not. However, the constants are still important: camera, tripod, lenses including macro and wide angle, remote shutter release, snacks, and water etc. For those planning to stay, bring food for dinner, breakfast, and snacks as well as any camping supplies you will need i.e. tent, sleeping pad or air mattress, sleeping bag, clothes, toiletries etc. FOR THOSE PLANNING TO CAMP, READ ON! There are two primary campgrounds at Courtright: Trapper Springs and Marmot Rock. Marmot Rock is down on the lake, so it's a bit more scenic, but both are nice. I have included links below for pricing and information. Both campgrounds are first come first serve. I (Emily) will be traveling up on Thursday and camping Thursday night to scout out some fun photo spots. If you plan to camp, let me know ASAP and I will reserve you a spot ahead of time, so we don't have to battle for campsites with others planning to camp for the weekend Friday night. Since we will be in a dark enough location away from light pollution, I thought it would also be fun to experiment with some astrophotography! Since there's a pretty good chance that most of you are new to shooting astro, as always, anyone with more experience is welcome to take the lead in sharing their knowledge with beginners! Myself and Hector Cavazos will be there to teach the basics as necessary as well. Unfortunately, it will not be ideal conditions for shooting the milky way, as the moon will be at about 77% (new moon conditions are ideal for milky way shots), but we will not let this stop us from shooting the night sky to the North and Northeast! SUNRISE: True sunrise is at 5:37am. If there are any that are dedicated enough to venture out with me in the morning, we should get setup and start shooting around 5am. Disclaimer: I haven't shot sunrise there before, so while I will be traveling there the night before to camp and find good places, if there are suggestions, I'm always open to them! Finally: As always, this is all in good fun! It's a learning experience for everyone, so never feel like you are being judged. We want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a great time!
