What we're about

This is a new group, started in April 2018. The purpose of this group is to get people interested in camping, backpacking, and day hikes together to explore outdoor New England. Whether you are new to this sort of thing, or someone with considerable experience in backpacking and mountaineering, this group will enable you to meet other people with the same passion and grow together as explorers, adventurers, and new friends.

Goals for the group include:

1. an organized camping or backpacking trip at least once a month-- possibly more often in the spring, fall, and summer

2. occasional long day hikes sprinkled in between our camping and backpacking trips

3. a monthly happy hour in the Boston are to plan trips and socialize

I started this group after moving to Boston in 2017 for a new job, and having trouble meeting people who were interested in doing more than day hikes. For me, the real joy of exploring the outdoors comes not from a day hike (where you often spend just as much time in your car) but waking up one morning in some beautiful wilderness location, drinking a cup of steaming hot coffee over the fire, and setting off to explore the beautiful areas around you. I'm going to do these things myself anyway, so why not invite others to join me and make some new friends out of it.

This group will be based in Boston, but I see us as taking trips to NH (White Mountains and elsewhere), Maine, and Western Mass. People from any of those areas are most welcome! There is no business sponsorship, app promotion, or any sort of financial motive behind this group.

Of course, this comes with all the usual caveats that apply to this sort of thing: you assume all risk associated with your participation in this group, including risk to life and limb, medical expenses, lost income, and all that. This group is open to dogs (I'm a dog owner and will bring mine). If you want to bring your dog, you'll need approval in advance from the organizer and will have to demonstrate that your dogs are like mine: have experience in the outdoors, good recall, and are non-aggressive towards other dogs and people. Any issues, and your dog will not be permitted to come.
