Beyond The Borders: Healthcare Technologies for Sensitive Communities

Providing equitable access to healthcare services imposes a diverse set of challenges, especially when the target population faces limited geographical accessibility, literacy, and socio-economical barriers. A plausible way forward to improve healthcare in the Global South countries is by promoting the development and use of digital technologies. New approaches such as Human-Computer Interaction for Development (HCI4D), have highlighted the need for a deepest human-centred design approach toward localized digital solutions that properly work in a resource-constrained context.

The concept of decolonizing technology for the Global South has been also around for a couple of years, however, there are still questions about how to optimize the design and implementation of healthcare digital tools for marginalized communities in design practice. Even though digital technologies are useful in alleviating these issues, it still begs the question of how implementations are perceived as useful and meaningful.

In this presentation, Juan Jiménez provides a landscape of digital healthcare technologies for the Global South through different cases. This is also an overview of how Human-Centered Design (HCD), User-Centered Design (UCD), and Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) have contributed to the existing practices of HCI4D.

Juan Jiménez is an Assistant Professor at the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University. He received a Ph.D. in Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) focused on user-centred design for personal reflective healthcare informatics. His work as a researcher and educator involves a cross-cultural experience in The Netherlands, Hong Kong, China, and Colombia. He is currently an active member of the Social Innovation for Healthcare Initiative (SIHI) network.
