“Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference” – Robert Frost
When it comes to searching for a job, the entire forest is paved with disappointment, failure, and frustration. As a result we are left with our two diverged roads: the well-worn path of shame and fear or the path of the courageous and brave, which is our “road less travelled”.
By choosing the path of the courageous and brave, we acknowledge that feelings of failure and disappointment are ok, and that we already have the confidence to push forward. “It’s okay to be discouraged. It’s not okay to quit.
My 5 R’s for building courage and confidence in your job search:
- Reframe – Turn negative thoughts into positive ones.
- Research – Be well prepared to ask and answer good questions.
- Re-evaluate – Regular check-ins of your goals can help you gain perspective.
- Relax – Practice mindfulness and stay calm under pressure.
- Reinvent – Practice self-care and focus on the things that boost your self-esteem.
Learning Objectives
• Learn to turn negative thoughts in to positive ones.
• Prepare for interviews by arming yourself with information about the company as well as the interviewer.
• Learn to have regular check-ins with yourself. Being clear about your career goals help you realize your own self-worth.
• Embrace your “disappointment monsters” by being mindful and staying calm despite the pressures and failures of a job search.
Takeaways
• Learning to flip negative thoughts into positive ones is choosing the path of the courageous and brave.
• Being the most prepared person in the job interview helps you stand out.
• Having clear goals and a clear career path will keep things in perspective.
• Practicing mindfulness and the courage to learn from the failures of your job search will keep you moving forward.
• Building a routine around the things that make you feel strong and confident on the inside will help you project the same confidence on the outside, and people will notice.
