John Day Fossil Beds Field Trip 6.6 miles 1540’ ele. gain

  • Target parking lot, far end by I-97

    63435 N Highway 97, Bend, OR (map)

    44.104214 -121.300957

  • Travel back in time and visit two units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We’ll hike first at the Blue Basin, where two trails provide an overview of the geology and fossils there. One is mostly flat, while the other climbs up to a viewpoint.

Bring Yaktrax or other traction devices. Next we backtrack to the Painted Hills to view some of the prettiest rocks in Oregon on some short, easy trails. Prepare for winter weather and icy terrain.

There is a lot of driving on this trip, but it’s well worth it! Bring gas money and snacks for the ride.

Jessica Beauchemin will be leading this outing
