New River Weekend
This is Mike's traditional trip and he's out of town so he gave me the go ahead to plan it this year. Saturday we'll meet at the New River State Park access parking lot at the boat launch, figure out shuttling options and paddle down to Mouth of Wilson. Sunday we will meet again at the state park, consolidate boats, drive up to the 16/88 bridge and paddle down to the state park. Saturday's trip is 18 miles, Sunday is 16. In the past we've done the upper section first, but since it's a bit shorter I'm going to change things up and make that the Sunday paddle. Expect a few riffles and a few Class I rapids along the way but nothing too crazy. We will meet at 9:30am both days in the New River State Park US 221 Access parking lot at the boat launch. Camping is available at the state park, I'm sure there are other options around as well. I am capping this at 20, as it's really the largest practical size. Please only sign up if you plan on paddling Saturday AND Sunday. It's too complicated to keep track of separate Saturday and Sunday lists especially with no cell reception up there. If you're more a day tripper, feel free to post a trip of your own any time. If it's looking like a wet cold rainy weekend as can happen sometimes, I'll make the call by the end of the day Wednesday 5/1. Should this be the case, I am not responsible for any cancelled camping reservations. I have Friday off and will be camping Friday and Saturday nights. There's a chance I may look at paddling options for Friday and will update here if that ends up being the case.

The River Called
The river called, or so I thought.
So, I paddled that beautiful stream.
My companions and I , the whole day sought,
The peace, the quiet, the birds, and the bream.
But the gift I will keep, from the river that day,
Is the love of my life, and the friends I have made.

(Written by paddler Fred Toms, following his participation in the 2011 Roanoke River Partners Paddle Days Event.)
