Train Trip to Altoona (Day trip)

CSGP/CAC will enjoy a day trip to Altoona by train. We will catch Amtrak at 7:30am (be early!) for the 2 hour trip to Altoona, and return to Pittsburgh by 8pm on the same day. The train goes through the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark on its way. While in Altoona, we will have a nice meal at a local diner, visit a railroad museum, and do some sightseeing. Various places are within walking distance, while others are accessible by local bus or Uber. (An all-day bus pass is only $3.30). Sights to walk to include the diner, Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, Southern Allegheny Museum of Art, Boyer Candy Factory, and the Castle Halloween Museum. Places accessible by bus include: Molly Maguire’s Pub, Baker Mansion, and Fort Roberdeau. Note: The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark (6.2 miles away) is not accessible by bus, but can be reached by Uber. Note that there is a fee to visit some of the venues.
The return train leaves Altoona at 5pm. Fare for the round trip is approximately $50 coach (price increases as the date approaches), and you must book it yourself with Amtrak, online (www.amtrak.com) or by phone (1-800-872-7245) (online is cheaper). CAC will NOT be collecting any money or handling any bookings. Attendees must purchase their own tickets and show up at the station early (or miss the train – they won’t wait for you like we do).

NOTE: Masks will be required on the train and at some venues.
