What’s more epic than a 4-day trip to Big Basin over Labor Day weekend? Nothing! According to my trusty Backpacking California book, “From the ridgeline spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail descends through lush woodlands, passes sweeping vistas, lines crystalline streams, explores old-growth redwood forest, visits beautiful waterfalls, and then reaches the Pacific Ocean at Waddell Beach.” Heck yes, sign me up! Our plan is as follows:
Friday 8/30 We arrive at Castle Rock Trailhead and hike to the “Waterman Gap Trail Camp,” which is approximately 9.5 miles. We’ll spend the night here!
Saturday 8/31 We hike from our camp to the “Lane Trail Camp,” which is approximately 9.8 miles.
Sunday 9/1 We hike from the “Lane Trail Camp” to “Sunset Camp” (7.2 miles) and get to do an additional side trip (optional but I’ll make you come) to see “Berry Creek Falls,” which sounds like one of the most beautiful waterfalls ever!
Monday 9/2 We finish at Waddell Beach (8 miles) and drive home.
I am an avid hiker but not in super shape so our pace can be slow. We should have plenty of shade to keep us cool and the difficulty is rated at moderate. If I can do this trail, ANYONE can do it! My reservation will fit up to 6 people but please don’t RSVP unless you’ve looked at your calendar and can for-sure make it!
Directions: Castle Rock State Park: Take Highway 35 south of the State Hwy 9 junction for 2.5 miles; the posted entrance is located on the west side of the road.
Cost wise, the trip will cost $75 total (for reservations and parking for 2 vehicles) plus gas money (probably around $25 per person). Obviously the per person cost is dependent on how many people come :)
