Central Talk

Two-thirds of young people and half of the population as a whole do not belong to any particular religion and the steady decline in religiosity in the UK is set to continue. The 28th report  of the British Social Attitudes (BSA) Survey has found. The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the findings, commenting that the government is 'fast becoming out of touch with the population' when it introduces policies and new laws with a religious bias.

Maybe you are a wizard with computers.
I am not and have been struggling  for years to send out these e-reminders.
Usually I compile the reminder as a document which I then convert to a pdf and upload as a file on the meetup site.
I then copy and paste the document into my email program 'gmail'  replacing graphics which often disappear.
We inherited a mailing list from Jemma Hooper when she left the BHA. So, then I created two mailing-lists as groups on Google and Yahoo.
It is to these groups that I email the reminder as well as sending it to a number of people who had subscribed to another mailing list created by Gerard E, a web-master from the time before.
We'll see how it goes. Nobody advised me to try the Chimp. It just appealed.
I have added to the chimp-list everyone from the earlier places - it weeded out a few duplicates and some malformed addresses. Meetup doesn't give me the email addresses of members but hopefully I will be able to just forward the chimpmail to the meetup mailing list.
I think I'll stop here because,
a) I am not sure that I know exactly what I am talking about and
b) Let's just see whether you receive this.
Feedback always appreciated.

According to all reports the Winterval Quiz and Social was a resounding triumph.
In partnership with the UCL Atheist Society and Skeptics in the Pub the event was well attended and a good sum of money was raised - £737.20 from donations on the night, but then there was also an anonymous donor who contributed £2000. Once overheads were met we were left with £2,437.20 which will go to the Uganda Humanist Schools Trust. Steve Hurd the Chief Executive of the UHST charity said, "It is fantastic news and we are very grateful to  everyone in Central London Humanists and kindred organisations for their efforts."
Well done to all  concerned.

Member of the BHA, then if you join us you will become one of our voting members.
Non-voting member then why not  join the BHA and then you can vote and stand for the committee and have your say, and even maybe, have your way!
V or non-V come along to our AGM on 18th January.
More news will follow very soon.

Rebekah Bennetch wrote on facebook:
"I'm again looking for contributors for the Parents Beyond Belief blog. If you would like to highlight some activities your group is doing for secular families, this is a great opportunity to publicize your group! Or, if you'd like to offer some reflection on secular parenting, that is also welcome. Feel free to message me for more details."

The Four Horsemen of New Atheism reunited, plus Philip Pullman, Carol Ann Duffy, Bill Gates and more.

Human Rights Day 2011

It has been a year like no other for human rights. Human rights activism has never been more topical or more vital. And through the transforming power of social media, ordinary people have become human rights activists.

This year millions of people decided the time had come to claim their rights. They took to the streets and demanded change. Many found their voices using the internet and instant messaging to inform, inspire and mobilize supporters to seek their basic human rights. Social media helped activists organize peaceful protest movements in cities across the globe - from Tunis to Madrid, from Cairo to New York - at times in the face of violent repression.

Human rights belong equally to each of us and bind us together as a global community with the same ideals and values. As a global community we all share a day in common: Human Rights Day on 10 December, when we remember the creation 63 years ago of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On Human Rights Day 2011,
we pay tribute to all human rights defenders

As a consultative member of the European Humanist Federation we have responded to requests for support.

International Planned Parenthood Foundation is taking action regarding deterioration of the situation of people living with HIV in Romania. We requested that our organisation’s name be added to a letter to the Prime Minister of Romania.

At the request of the European Humanist Federation we signed a letter organised by the European Pro-Choice Network, to try to defeat an anti-choice move in Hungary.
