The CLHG committee had been requested to send the message below to our members.

Dear CLHG member,

I am a PhD student in anthropology at University College London and my research is on atheism and humanism. As part of this research I have been attending meetings and talks of the CLHG. I know people can sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable talking to nosey researchers like myself so i just wanted to reassure people about a few things that may be of concern.
Firstly my intention in this research is NOT to portray atheists or humanists in any negative way. I myself am an atheist who agrees with the tenets of humanism. The aim of my research is to improve society's understanding of what it means to be an atheist or humanist.
Secondly I do not engage in any form of covert recording, so please don't worry I have a hidden camera or tape recorder on my person.
Thirdly although conversations we have may end up being used as part of my written research this will be used in a very generalised way and identities will be kept anonymous. For example 'at a meeting a member of the group stated that David Cameron's statements about Britain being a Christian country made them feel like the government doesn't represent nonreligious people'.
If, at any point, you have mentioned something to me you would prefer not to be used for research please just tell me. Similarly if you would prefer anything you said in my presence to be 'off limits' just let me know. I have no desire to upset people or make them feel like they are being snooped upon.
If you have any questions about my research please do just come and find me at a meeting, send me an email through meetup or at [address removed].
Finally a big thank you to the groups organisers for accepting me into the group and to everyone for being so friendly and welcoming and for helping me out with this research, I literally couldn't do it without you.
Lorna
