CLHG - appeal for support

Message from the Chair

Dear members

At the point of writing this note, I see that our membership through our Meetup site has now reached an amazing 500.  So, a special welcome then to our 500th member, Najam Imam.

As our rapid expansion continues, we continue to be faced with the challenge of getting to know each other, which of course is one of the main reasons why all of us joined in the first place.  The social evenings at the pub certainly help, and I do hope that the newer members are finding it easy to make friends.  Many of those new faces have taken the trouble to introduce themselves to me and I hope they will forgive me if it takes me time to remember all their names.

As you would expect, organising such a large and diverse group takes some effort – not an overburdensome one, but one that does need consistent attention so as to ensure a ready supply of speakers, venues and alternative social gatherings, as well as starting to engage in fund-raising and campaigning activities.  We still intend to hold a general meeting to organise ourselves properly (we have a draft constitution ready), but this will now be best left until early in the New Year.

In the meantime, we are looking for a bit more help from volunteers, mainly to help spread the load and make sure that we have enough back-up for each other.  That way, we can be sure that life goes on as normal whenever any of the present committee goes away, gets too busy elsewhere or falls ill.

So – are there any of you enthusiastic humanists who would like to help?

For example, would anyone like to organise a one-off event?  Last December we held a party at Paradiso’s, in The Cut, to celebrate the Festive Season – which we shamelessly called a Christmas Meal!  Last week, a number of us went to see Inherit the Wind at the Old Vic.  Some of you may have other ideas.

Meanwhile, back at the coalface, Josh Kutchinsky, our Membership Secretary, is doing a fantastic job in managing our Meetup site and keeping us all informed of what is going on, Clive Wilson is keeping tabs on the finances, Dave Miller is liaising with our venues and Alice Fuller is maintaining our Facebook presence and starting up a campaign to support a humanist girls’ football team in Uganda.  I know they would love a bit of support.

We are also looking for help with our website – any offers from those of you with the right skills?  Since it is already set up, it just needs someone to administer it and keep it regularly updated.

As Chairman, it has always been my wish that we stay with our loose, inclusive structure and get as many members as possible to help in little ways so that none of us need take on more than we can sensibly manage. We don’t have many committee meetings and you could think about joining the committee for the short period up to the general meeting and then decide whether you’d like to carry on.

So, do please let me know if you would like to join in the fun.

Hope to see you at the pub (Somers Town Coffeehouse).

Best wishes to all

Alan Palmer
