Homeport Farm Park is what Anne Arundel County calls a "Future Park". While they own the land, they really haven't done much in the way of improvements that would make it look like what most of us think a park should look like. The picture above is the gravel path to the put in area past an old barn that pretty much looks like it could collapse any minute. Remember this picture when you're trying to find you way to the put in.
The great thing is that while it's hardly a perfect park, it provides kayakers relatively easy access to the South River near Annapolis which has been a difficult thing to do in the past. If you've never been there, the South River is a pretty cool place to paddle with huge expanses of open water mixed with a number of smaller creeks to explore. Most of it is residential neighborhoods with a large number of multi-million dollar homes.
It's about 200 yards from where we will park to the cars to the actual put in so WHEELS are a really good thing to bring along on this paddle. From the put in we will be paddling up stream on the South River on a yet to be determined route that should total around 11 to 12 miles with a stop for lunch at Mike's Crab House on Riva Road. Bring cash to pay lunch and a piece of rope to tie off your boat in the water.
Please remember that 10:30 is the "On The Water Time". Please arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to launch by then. Remember that you have that 200 yard carry to the water and need to allow a little bit extra time for that. Due to the large open water aspects of the South River it can get pretty choppy if it's windy so this probably is NOT a good paddle for those with limited kayak experience.
There are rental kayaks available to members for this paddle at the weekend event rate of $50.00 which includes a paddle and PFD. To reserve one, please answer the rental question when you RSVP.
I might also note that with Kimmie recovering from spinal surgery I am looking for some help to lead this paddle. Those of you with event host privileges on the web site should feel free to sign yourselves up before the RSVP's open.
