Hands on Apache Flink workshop!

In this workshop, we will go over a hands on tutorial highlighting building a Flink stream processor.

The workshop will show you how to

 1. Set up a stream consisting of Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus tracker data

 2. Use different types of windowing techniques to generate metrics on the CTA

 3. Sink the metrics to a queryable data sink

 4. Turn all of the above into a deployable job that can be scaled up.

You will see all of Flink's major components in action: streams, sinks, windows, triggers, watermarks, etc.

A preconfigured virtual machine the workshop materials will be available for download prior to the meetup.

Pizza and Soda will be provided!

Joe Olson is a local area developer specializing in applying emerging technology to solve bunsiness problems, and is currently focusing on understanding the rapidly developing streaming space.

Here's the link to download VM provided in meetup. Let me know if you are able to download it.

Please note that I will remove the file in one week as this is consuming most of my drive space. Thanks Joe for yesterday's presentation. It was really helpful.

    Link to the code repository:https://github.com/chi-apache-flink-meetup/ctaProcessor

I put the slides in that repo as well. Also, I will update the Readme file on the desktop of the VM in this project as soon as I can. I'll try to get to that tomorrow.

Really cool talk last night Joe! Can you post the link to the code on Github when you get a chance?

Hi Joel. Thanks for presenting tonight. When you get a chance, will you please post the few slides you put together? Also, we need to figure out how to distribute the VM for non-Mac users, as it didn't seem to work for any of us.

What floor/company is this hosted at?

    • Andrew W.

It's at IBM at 71 S Wacker. I forget the floor number, but building security will direct you to the correct floor.

Is there anything we need to setup or prepare for this workshop? Some prerequisites?

I'm working on a VirtualBox Ubuntu VM that will have everything configured - Kafka, Flink, IntelliJ, the code, data, etc. I don't know how to distribute this before the meeting, as it is 10GB. I think the best we are going to be able to do is distribute it at the meetup via USB drives....
