The purpose of the group is to gather together regularly, once a week, either Saturdays or Sundays, for a few weeks to learn the foundations of Italic and Foundational calligraphy, which are the basis of letterforms and type design.
I started this group since I have been a professional graphic designer, lettering artist and type designer with over 25 years experience in the business. Now is the time for me to share my knowledge with the younger and older generations who are interested in learning more about correct calligraphy techniques. And with all the heavy tech related items we use, learning calligraphy, working with our hearts, hands and mind will be a welcome relief.
Anyone interested in learning the above said skills should join. All levels welcome.
Events will be held at my studio in West Town, Chicago. I’ll teach the basics of calligraphy. We’ll use many types of found objects as tools, i.e. brushes, quills, chiseled pens, etc. We’ll make our own calligraphy tools. It will be great fun and hands on, freeing and relaxing. Additionally, we’ll use various papers and ink. Students will learn and continue to improve their skills. We’ll incorporate students own poetry or choice’s of other poets work as inspiration to calligraph.
