What we're about

Please join us to learn and practice Nonviolent Communication in the Chicago Metro area.

This Meet Up group will promote workshops, retreats and practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) as taught by Marshall Rosenberg, Ph D. We will promote events led by Certified Trainers of NVC and candidates in the certification program of the Center for Nonviolent Communication. In addition, we will consider requests from others with NVC training as well.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a model developed by Marshall Rosenberg in the late 1960s. Dr. Rosenberg was motivated to help people connect with their own humanity and that of others respectfully, compassionately, peacefully and with joy. NVC offers a practical and unique model to empower and transform relationships. It is inspirational in its invitation to cherish the needs of others as our own. We predict it will offer challenge and satisfaction to all who wish to embrace life more fully.

I've found it's much easier when I practice on a regular basis. Please join me in practicing empathy and communication skills based on Nonviolent Communication by Marshall B. Rosenberg and Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook by Lucy Leu. My intention is to curate a brief introduction of a specific Nonviolent Communication concept each week, along with an exercise or two, so we can practice embodying that concept. I am NOT a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC). My intention is to facilitate a collaborative group of compassionate communication enthusiasts and allow the structure of the group to evolve based on what works for everyone involved. It is important to me that this group feels accessible to all, regardless of schedule, income, education, etc. This even will be free of charge. I will accept donations for the time and energy to facilitate these meetings. I will give 50% of any donations to the Chicago area Nonviolent Communication facilitators group, to help share NVC throughout the Chicago area. If you are new to Nonviolent Communication, I would love to set up a 15 minute call to catch you up to speed and offer resources. To schedule a call, please email me at [masked]. My intention is to make the group as much on the same page as possible, considering every member's various familiarity with these concepts!

We begin with a mindful body scan/self check-in. Then we work as a group to provide an empathic space for people to share what came up with the self check-ins and what's alive in them. Often times, meetings focus on getting ourselves familiar with a vocabulary of needs and staying attuned to empathy. All levels of familiarity with NVC are welcome! ----- For in-person meetings: Please arrive between 6:45-7:00pm. We will start the meeting at 7:00 pm. Please feel free to bring snacks or drink to share if you'd like! You can enter the building through the doors on the Kimball side of the street (not the big red doors). By using NVC in our daily lives, we can identify and transform deeply ingrained "violent" communication methods that get in the way of having satisfying relationships. NVC uses consciousness, language, and communication skills to create a framework from which you can: express your feelings and needs with clarity and self-responsibility; listen to others’ feelings and needs with compassion and empathy; facilitate mutually beneficial outcomes for all parties involved.
